If you notice that your dishwasher is not draining, then you will want to have it repaired as soon as possible to prevent water damage and to be able to do dishes as you normally would. Here are some fixes that can resolve the problem of your dishwasher not draining:

  • Run the Garbage Disposal: Usually, the dishwasher is set to drain through the garbage disposal in your sink. However, when the disposal is clogged, there is less space for the dishwasher water to run through, causing it to sit in the dishwasher and not drain. While running the disposal, be sure that you are running hot water from the sink to thoroughly clean out any debris that may be trapped in there.
  • Clean the Air Gap: If running the garbage disposal didn't do the trick, then you may need to clean the air gap. You can do this by removing the air gap cap and locating the large tube that goes to the garbage disposal. Once you find this large tube, you want to disconnect it and thoroughly clean it out.
  • Check the Drain Connection: While the air gap tube is out, you should be sure to also check the drain connection just in case. There may be blockage at the opening of the disposal. You can insert a screwdriver into the small opening at the top of the disposal and move it around to be sure that the space is clear. If you feel something stuck, try and remove it with the screwdriver.
  • Clear the Drain Tube: Finally, to ensure that your dishwasher will drain once you have resolved all these potential issues, clear the drain tube by disconnecting it from the air gap and thoroughly cleaning it out. By now, this should have resolved the problem with your dishwasher not draining.

Luckily, there are many ways that you can repair your dishwasher when it is not draining. The above methods/tips should help you solve most problems; however, if none of these solutions work, this likely means that you have a bad pump that you will need to have replaced. If this is the case, you will need to call in an appliance repair service that can replace the pump for you. This will ensure that the dishwasher is back to running like normal in no time, since a professional will have all the right tools to easily replace the pump inside.
