In the manufacturing business, especially when it comes to food manufacturing and packaging, it is important to consider every element that is used carefully. If you rely on cans to package the food that is processed in your facility, you will spend a lot of time getting to know industrial coatings that are used to line and protect the cans themselves. The coating must be safe to come in contact with food. 

Not every type of industrial coating is safe for use in food containers. Some industrial coatings could potentially leak out dangerous chemicals into a canned food product with prolonged exposure. For example, the powder coating that is used to make some appliances and automotive components resilient to the elements contains chemical compounds that would definitely not be safe to combine with food. The coating must stand up to the varying acidity levels in food. 

Foods can have different acidity levels, so any coating that is used on the inside of food cans must have the versatility to maintain its composure in spite of what acid levels the contents of the can may be. For instance, a vegetable like tomatoes are highly acidic, and so are some fruits. If the industrial coating inside of the can is not resilient enough, it can break down after long periods of contact with a high-acid food. This kind of problem could compromise the safety of the food itself, which is a major concern for any food processor or manufacturer. 

The coating must be able to stand up during the sterilization process. 

Before cans are filled with food at the food manufacturing plant, the cans themselves have to be sanitized to prevent bacteria inside of the cans before they are sealed and sent to retailers. This means that any coating used on the cans must be able to stand up during this intense process without breaking down. Sterilization usually involves using high-temperature steam and possibly sanitizing agents, and not every industrial coating can stand up to that.
