If you are thinking about getting a new roof and you live in a high snow area, you want to make sure that your roof is going to last through all the winters and all the weight of the snow that will fall on it. There are things that you can do to help with that issue. Talking to the roofer can help you figure out what you can do to help your roof last longer, especially during the winter.

Reinforcements

One thing that you can do is to see if adding some reinforcements to the roof will help it last longer. That's because snow is really heavy. This is especially true when the snow is very wet snow. The more moisture there is in the snow, the heavier it is going to be, and that weight can really add up if you end up with multiple inches on your roof. You can talk to your roofer to see if adding some extra reinforcement to your roof will let that weight spread through the roof and through the house better, which can help to keep your roof from collapsing under the weight.

Clear Your Roof

Another thing that you can do is to clear off your roof. Your roofer can suggest that you get something like a roof rake so that you can clean off the roof after each storm. A roof rake has a rake tool on one end, and it is on a telescoping pole. You can extend the pole so that it will help you reach up to your roof, and you just pull some of the snow off. You may not be able to get all the snow off the roof with the roof rake, but you can get snow off the edge of the roof, and that can help the rest of the snow slide off the roof. Getting rid of the snow will help to make sure that your roof doesn't start leaking. The weight of the snow can cause the lower layers to turn into ice, and that can actually help to force water in under your shingles, which will cause your roof to start leaking.

If you are going to get a new roof, talk to the roofing contractor to see how you can help your roof stand up to all the snow that you are going to end up with on a regular basis.
